Carmut Me 米家宓  believes in the importance of arts and culture and social entrepreneurship in placemaking, community identity building, heritage preservation and local economy invigoration. Her work has focused on building connections between people and organizations through collaborative research and design. She first became involved in Vancouver’s Chinatown community through a project during the first year of her M.A. in Community and Regional Planning at the University of British Columbia. Working with the Aboriginal Tourism Association of BC, her project explored ways in which cultural industries can reach Chinese visitors, both local and abroad. She continued to do work in the neighbourhood, working with the City of Vancouver’s Downtown Eastside Planning Group and BIAs to conduct a community-wide survey and research project in line with the 2013 Local Area Plan. Previously, Carmut worked in the field of landscape design in Hong Kong. Her professional experiences in both public and private sectors in Asian and Western contexts have contributed to her accomplishments in cross-cultural negotiation and communication. Carmut is fluent in English, Cantonese and Mandarin. In her free time, she volunteers at the Chinese Cultural Centre’s Museum and Archives as a tour guide, supporting outreach and educating visitors about Vancouver’s Chinatown.
